LA-Based Folk Artist Poeina Releases Poignant Heartbreak Ballad

by Mike Scarfo

We take a step outside of New England today to the opposite coast to give some shine to LA-based singer-songwriter Poeina with the release of her latest single, "Unloveable", a beautifully poignant ballad that encourages the necessity of self-discovery after suffering from gut-wrenching heartbreak, a feeling that nearly all of us can resonate with on some level.

While it was Poeina's intention to illuminate a degree of despair that this heartbreak had left her feeling, there was an importance to simultaneously juxtapose an understanding that it doesn't necessarily mean all hope is lost. One can utilize heartbreak as an opportunity for personal growth and finding self-worth while still believing in the prospect of true love.

"In that utmost vulnerable heartbroken moment, I took out my phone, and recorded a voice memo of my ugliest fear of being 'Unloveable'," said Poeina. "I knew right then these personal feelings were also part of a bigger universal journey of the human desire to be loved. I hope listeners who relate to my moment of desolation will also see the juxtaposition of beauty in the music as an obvious statement that we are indeed loveable, each one of us, uniquely created by and for love."

Fully written and performed by Poeina, with the help of multiple collaborators such as production from Bill Tyler Godfrey and Andrew Monheim, Vibraphones by Alex Burke, Harp by Raelyn Olson, Cornets by Thomas Deakin, Stand-up bass by Jake Leckie, and Violin by Jennifer Fagre, what is most impressive about "Unloveable" is its gorgeous instrumentation that clearly defines the mood of loss, while finding a way to bring out that glimmer of hope. Mixing is credited to Adam Moseley and mastering by Lawrence Biancardi.

"Unloveable" is out now on all platforms, be sure to give it a listen and give her a follow on Instagram
